5 Ways to Make Your Apartment Balcony Stand Out

I'm somebody!

I'm somebody!

Standing out in a big city isn’t terribly easy to do. We are literally one among millions, and finding some individualism amongst so many fellow citizens can be suffocatingly difficult. We want to scream “I’m somebody!” to passersby in an effort to grab their attention. And even then, we likely wouldn’t be noticed.

So as Chicagoans, how do we stand out in a noticeable way? Through the little things, of course! Tip a little extra, smile more, or (this idea is a little crazy) remove the earbuds and have a conversation with someone. And once you get back to your cozy apartment, you don’t have to stop being noticed. With summer rolling around, now is the time to take advantage of that extra space that you never really use. You probably know what we’re referring to from the title, but in case you need a refresher, here are 5 ways to make your apartment balcony stand out. And of course, always check with your landlord/management before you pull a Bob Vila on your unsuspecting balcony.

1: Lighting should fit mood first, functionality second
For most of the rooms inside the apartment, it’s a good thing to have some strong lighting. But out on the balcony, it’s a different story. Look for bulbs dimmer than usual and throw some colored shades over them to give your nook a cozy hue. A female-friendly lighting option is the outdoor fairy lights (Christmas lights to the laymen) that look great regardless of the season.

2: Give us a place to sit
This is pretty self-explanatory. A few comfortable, rain-friendly chairs will let your guests know that the balcony isn’t just for show, and they’re encouraged to sit and stay for a while.

3: A bookshelf is worth thousands upon thousands of words
Until books are abolished by the paperback-eating Kindle, there will always be a place for some old fashioned, page-flipping reading. Put a bookshelf out there equipped with magazines and books that you’d be okay with getting a little weather worn. This is perfect for winding down by yourself after a brutal day at work or for ignoring someone you simply don’t feel like talking to.

4: Add vitality and get parenting practice with plants
Speaking of winding down, nothing calms like a few well-placed oxygen dispensers. Remember to factor in how much light your balcony gets each day and plan your potted pals accordingly. And for you future moms and dads, taking care of plants is the perfect way to warm up for your inbound ankle biters. Kids only need water and sunlight, right?

5: Hardly any space? Hang ‘em high!
Plants, books, food, drinks, lighting. You know what they say: “If space ain’t great, elevate!” Be sure to secure everything well unless one of your balcony decorating goals includes concussions.
