Community’s Streets Named After Local DJ, Irish Nun

A little known fact about Eastgate Village? In a ceremony last fall, two of our streets were dedicated to two very notable people — Mother Catherine McAuley, the Irish nun who founded the Sisters of Mercy, and Herbert Rogers Kent, Honorary Mayor of Bronzeville and an important figure in Chicago radio history.

Sr. Sheila Lyne, President and CEO of Mercy Hospital, accepted the honor on behalf of Mother Catherine McAuley. Michael Scott, a partner with Mercy Development, introduced honoree Herbert Rogers Kent, who noted “I hope this street inspires young people to reach their goals.” According to New West Realty President, Ted Mazola, this “is what over 115 families have already chosen to do.”

A 19th century nun and Chicago’s Cool Gent. Talk about diversity.
